Euro 4 HOWO Truck Explained: Emission Standards and Euro 6 Comparison

Emission standards play a critical role in the heavy truck industry, affecting vehicle performance, operating costs, and market access. SINOTRUK's HOWO trucks are available in configurations meeting various emission standards, with Euro 4 being a common specification for many export markets.

The Euro 4 emission standard, implemented in Europe from 2005, significantly reduced the permissible levels of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter (PM) from diesel engines. For heavy-duty diesel engines, Euro 4 limits NOx emissions to 3.5 g/kWh and PM to 0.02 g/kWh, representing reductions of approximately 30% and 80% respectively compared to Euro 3 standards.

HOWO trucks meeting Euro 4 standards typically employ Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology, which uses AdBlue (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to convert NOx emissions into harmless nitrogen and water vapor. This technology requires operators to maintain AdBlue supplies and may slightly increase operating costs, but provides significant environmental benefits.

The Euro 6 standard, which became mandatory in Europe from 2014, further reduces NOx emissions to 0.4 g/kWh and PM to 0.01 g/kWh. Euro 6 trucks typically employ a combination of SCR, Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), and Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) technologies. While Euro 6 provides the cleanest emissions, the additional complexity and cost may not be justified for all operating environments.

SINOTRUK offers HOWO trucks in Euro 3, Euro 4, and Euro 5 configurations, with Euro 6 available for markets requiring the highest emission standards. The choice of emission standard should consider the operating environment, regulatory requirements, fuel quality, and total cost of ownership. For many developing markets, Euro 4 represents a practical balance of emission control and operational simplicity.
